Abusive Treatment by an Employer Is Still Abuse, Even When It Is Not Discrimination

Upset

Many employment discrimination lawsuits arise from work environments where a work supervisor harasses employees because of one or more protected characteristics of the employees, such as their race, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, or family status.  To file a discrimination complaint against your employer, you must first contact the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, whereupon they will investigate your complaint and see whether they can corroborate your allegations of harassment and other discriminatory behavior.  Employees might also be harassed by being the victim of adverse actions targeted against them due to their protected characteristics.  The deadlines for filing complaints are short.  If you know that your employer’s treatment of you is unacceptable but are not sure whether it meets the legal definition of discrimination, contact a Los Angeles discrimination and harassment lawyer.

Former Employees Sue Star Over Abusive Behavior

Here in Los Angeles, everyone has met a celebrity, so the usual icebreaker topic of conversation is not which celebrities you have met, but rather which ones displayed the most outrageously entitled behavior.  It is all fun and games to be a mere eyewitness to a celebrity temper tantrum every now and then, but when the celebrity is losing her temper at you, it is no fun, especially if this same celebrity issues your paychecks.

Three former assistants of a Los Angeles-based singer and Internet personality are suing her for her abusive treatment of them through their tenure working for her.  The plaintiffs, two men and a woman who worked for the star at different times between 2021 and 2023, tell similar stories about the star’s behavior toward them.  She would lose her temper for the smallest reasons and go on expletive-laden rants in person, over the phone, and by text message.  She would insult the plaintiffs’ race, national origin, and sexual orientation, as well as using abusive language unrelated to protected characteristics.  The female plaintiff also claims that the singer made unwelcome sexual advances toward her, pressuring her to hang out one on one and to go on dates with her.  Another common thread in the plaintiffs’ allegations is that the star kept them away from their family members in time of need.  One plaintiff moved from the Dominican Republic to Los Angeles to work for the plaintiff shortly before his child’s birth, leaving behind the rest of his family.  Another plaintiff claims that the singer made her work long hours during the plaintiff’s father’s final illness, and she wishes that she could have used that time to be with her parents.  The allegations the plaintiffs are making include battery and sexual misconduct, and the total amount they are seeking in damages exceeds $4 million.
